Yahoo! Gallery

When I ran the Yahoo! Developer Network, our primary goal was to open Yahoo! properties to third-party developer innovation. Part of that was to provide developer products such as web services APIs and tools such as Y!UI. But another part of that was helping developers find an audience of Yahoo! users (and vice versa). So we developed a new consumer site called Yahoo! Gallery, a central place where users could find and rate applications that used Yahoo! goodness.

My team designed and built Yahoo! Gallery; it launched in March 2006. Yahoo is planning on shutting down the site in July 2009. This is a pity, not just because it's something we worked on and were proud of, but because the alternative (letting each individual Yahoo! property figure out how to do this on their own) isn't really optimal. I'm hoping that this doesn't reflect an abandonment of the principles of openness and community engagement that my team tried to further during the time I ran the Developer Network, but who knows what Yahoo's strategy is these days.
